Barrie Thorne is a Professor of Sociology and Gender and Women's Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and also has an adjunct, Professor II appointment in the Centre for Gender Research at the University of Oslo. She does research and teaches in the areas of family, gender, childhoods and age relations, feminist theory, and ethnographic methods. Thorne is former Chair of the Section on Sex and Gender, and the Section on Children and Youth, of the American Sociological Association. Her publications include Gender Play: Girls and Boys in School (1993); Rethinking the Famiiy: Some Feminist Questions (co-edited 1992; 2002); Feminist Sociology: Life Histories of a Movement (co-edited,1999); and Language, Gender and Society (co-edited, 1993), and many journal articles and book chapters, most recently focused on children growing up in a mixed-income, ethnically diverse area of Oakland.
